2025 Hoe Wa`a Challenge          September 21, 2025

This is the 12th Annual POCC Outrigger Race. We are thrilled that this race’s home has been in Brigantine since 2016, and Atlantic City before that.

NEW RACE LOCATION 2025

26th Street City Dock

Details of Event:

Because of space restrictions, only Unlimited Canoes will be raced.

There will be 3 races: a women’s race (approximately 11 miles), men’s race (approximately 11 miles), and a mixed (3 women, 3 men) race (approximately 9 miles).

There will be a safety meeting with the captains of each canoe prior to each race.

The women’s course and men’s course will be approximately 11 miles and will start on the Thorofare (the channel off of Boot Island) run under the Brigantine
Bridge, through the Absecon Inlet, and straight into the ocean. A safety boat will lead the racing crews to the turn buoy, and canoes will return back through the inlet, finishing at City Dock.

The mixed race will run the same course, but the turn mark / buoy moved closer, so that the race will be approximately 9 total.

****If conditions are unsafe to run an ocean race, then the boats will race an alternate race course in the inlet, shown on maps below****

Motorized watercraft / safety boats with radio capability will monitor the canoes on the water during the race. A race coordinator/director will be on the beach at all times, and all safety / race personnel will be in communication.
